The long awaited Dollar General on Hwy 142 is open for business! They carry a wide variety of merchandise, from grocery staples to school supplies and more.

Tornado Strikes Newborn
April 27 - No One Hurt

The downtown area of Newborn was decimated by a strong storm which took down many hundred year old trees. Several houses were hit by the trees, but miraculously no one was injured. Work crews had power back up by Friday afternoon, and the sound of chainsaws will continue for a while. Read the Covington News article here. Newborn was previously struck by a tornado in 1866 - at least two people died in that storm.

Newborn Celebrates Arbor Day

After losing many of our lovely trees in last spring's tornado, we celebrated Arbor Day 2012 with hotdogs, drinks and chips (courtesy of Blackwell Grocery in Mansfield). a fun
Tree Climbing Activity for the kids (sponsored by Arbor Equity of Covington), free tree seedlings (thanks to the Town of Newborn and the Covington Service Guild) plus we had a very special guest: Smokey the Bear!

Big progress already! You may have noticed around town that so far 8 donated trees have been moved from DNR Charlie Elliott WMA to Newborn using the Georgia Forestry Commission Tree spade, 14 trees from Moon's Tree Farm have been planted and 34 more trees from Jack's Creek Tree Farm will be installed in January. The purchased trees were paid for with the GUFC Grant (see below). Citizens have agreed that after the initial planting they will keep the trees healthy by mulching and watering in the critical first few years.

A new park is in the works for Newborn!
The Mayor and Council continue to plan this exciting new park, plus upgrades around the property of the Old Schoolhouse. The Town is fortunate to be working with UGA students this spring who will be suggesting a plan / design and who seek input from the citizens of Newborn and the surrounding area. Feel free to email your thoughts or stop by Town Hall to see drawings in progress.

Newborn Recieves Urban Forestry Grant

A $4,825 grant is given courtesy of the Georgia Urban Forest Council to help replant trees lost in the recent storms. Read the whole story in the Newton Citizen here.

Need more help with your trees? The Georgia Forestry Commission provides technical assistance that will help communities and individuals throughout Georgia manage and conserve community trees and forests. The GFC is no longer able to conduct individual site visits. We can electronically answer technical questions about management, tree planting and care, insect and disease issues and tree conservation through the “Ask the Arborist” portal on the GFC website where we maintain a digital library of publications that illuminates issues and opportunities for tree care and management. In addition, you can send in a digital images for review to help determine the best course of action for the tree(s). Additionally, the GFC provides a link to Arborists certified by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) who conduct fee-based site visits that can help homeowners determine their tree care solutions.

Firearm Ordinance Changed

Within the city limits, residents now may use shotguns only to eliminate "nuisance smaller game" during daylight hours, on one’s own property and if they are more than 250 feet from property lines and roadways. Read the complete ordinance here.

Town Slogan Announced

Thanks to the over 150 people who voted, we have a new town slogan: Newborn, A Town With Characters. The person who suggested this slogan generously donated her prize money back to the cause of restoring the Newborn Community Center, the Old Schoolhouse. (She's a character herself!)
