Mayor and Citizens "Reshaping The Heart of Newborn"

Mayor Gregg Ellwanger was recently interviewed for the Newton Trails Newsletter:
"This is a story of government refocusing its priorities when its citizens redefine theirs."
"Newborn, a picturesque and historical town of more than 800 in eastern Newton County, may be removed from the bustle of urban life, but its residents share connections to the same changing needs and attitudes as Atlanta and beyond."

Wayne Sams replaces late wife on Town Council

Power was out between 1-3 days for most residents.  Lots of trees down, no injuries reported.  Town Clerk Rowe came to work in a dark office so that she could patiently explain that she is not in charge of when the power comes on. More than one resident sheltered at Town Hall during the actual storm.

Newborn Mourns the Loss of Mayor Roger Sheridan, 92.

Newborn on the Radio!

Recently WABE (90.1 FM) rebroadcast a story on The Economics of Farm to Table.
"In 2003, there were nine farmers markets in Atlanta. By last year, that number had jumped to 85, according to figures from Georgia Organics. A new study from that organization claims that more food from local sources could be an economic boon to the state."
"Kate Sweeney took a closer look at the economics of farm- to-table in Georgia?from farm, to farmers' market, to plate. The journey began in Newborn, Georgia."
Listen to the whole story here.

New Mayor Gregg Ellwanger sworn in March 3.

Roger suffered a massive heart attack, passing away on December 3, 2013.
He was the oldest mayor in the state, but despite his age was an active leader and advocate for our community.  As a retired engineer, he was proud of accomplishments such as road paving and support for the Old Schoolhouse structure.  As a business person, he was diligent in seeking new businesses such as Dollar General, and as a visionary he supported the county's 2050 plan as well as the Rails to Trails effort in the county as ways to increase business and the quality of life in our town.
He had a long and interesting life, always seeking to contribute where he could.  He ran for a second term of mayoral office, saying,  "Everybody needs a challenge, and you don’t want to throw all of your experience away. This has been a situation where I can take my experience and put it to use. It’s a challenge to me." He was honored with a Purple Heart in World War II, and earned a very large place in the heart of Newborn.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Newborn UMC, veteran's organizations or the Newborn Schoolhouse.
     Read the newspaper article here.
Over 200 folks came to enjoy the crafts (most booths ever!) the music (who doesn't love Johnny Roquemore's Hornyhead song!!!) the fishing tournament (congrats to our winners - see slide show below) and of course the Hornyhead QUEEN! Here's a link to a video from Covington News which features some of the music and quotes from Councilperson Martha Ellwanger. (requires flash).

Saturday, October 18 is the annual Schoolhouse Reunion at the Old Newborn Schoolhouse.  Come at 11 to catch up with friends.  At noon we'll have some delicious BBQ prepared by the good folks at Newborn UMC (see article to left) and then we'll hear readings from the book about Newborn which was published last year. Helen Amendola (pictured above on her horse) will recall the Day Roosevelt Died, and what school was like back in the day.  Come and join the fun and memories!  Reserve your lunch here.

Save the Date!  Saturday, October 18, from 11 am - 1 pm the historic Newborn United Methodist Church will be serving their famous BBQ as part of their Homecoming Celebration.  Only $8 gets you coleslaw, baked beans, bread and ½ a chicken - if you dine in you get drinks as well.  Buy advance tickets here.

Declared to be the best Arbor Day celebration in recent memory, on February 22 almost 200 folks enjoyed a free hotdog, met Smoky Bear, and took home their choice of dogwood or Georgia Oak seedling.
Here's a great video (flash required) by Covington News' Darrell Everidge featuring Dennis Fincher and a few other Newborn Pickers Circle buddies who provided music.
Several people spoke in appreciation of late Mayor Roger Sheridan when a tree and stone marker were dedicated in his memory.   Mayor Sheridan led Newborn's recovery efforts after the tornado of 2011 destroyed dozens of trees in town.
Beryl Budd, retired Forester, demonstrated how to plant a new tree successfully.   A representative of the Georgia Forestry Commission presented Newborn with a 14th Tree City designation for ongoing participation in this program.

Qualifying for Newborn Town Council Elections has closed, and because they are unopposed, Mayor Sheridan and Martha Ellwanger will continue to serve our town.  Tom Kreiger decided not to run again for his seat. SO, a BIG THANK YOU to Ruth for stepping up and getting involved.
Do you have good ideas and a love of Newborn?  Start attending council meetings, and run for office at the next election!

Congratulations, Ruth Sams!

Santa at the Park Santa Claus himself will be at our Town Park from 4 - 6 pm to hear from all the neighbor kids.  Bring your camera for a great photo op!  There will be hot chocolate and cookies, and music provided by the Newborn Pickers Circle.

The GFC is no longer able to conduct individual site visits. We can electronically answer technical questions about management, tree planting and care, insect and disease issues and tree conservation through the “Ask the Arborist” portal on the GFC website where we maintain a digital library of publications that illuminates issues and opportunities for tree care and management. In addition, you can send in a digital images for review to help determine the best course of action for the tree(s).  Additionally, the GFC provides a link to Arborists certified by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) who conduct fee-based site visits that can help homeowners determine their tree care solutions.

Tornado Strikes Newborn
April 27 2011 - No One Hurt

The downtown area of Newborn was decimated by a strong storm which took down many hundred year old trees.  Several houses were hit by the trees, but miraculously no one was injured.  Work crews had power back up by Friday afternoon, and the sound of chainsaws will continue for a while.  Read the Covington News article here. Here is the official path from the National Weather Service. If you have photos to share please email them and we'll post.  Newborn was previously struck by a tornado in 1866 - at least two people died in that storm.

Firearm Ordinance Changed

Within the city limits, residents now may use shotguns only to eliminate "nuisance smaller game" during daylight hours, on one’s own property and if they are more than 250 feet from property lines and roadways. Read the complete ordinance here.

Newborn's Arbor Day

Picture
After losing many of our lovely trees in last spring's tornado, we celebrated Arbor Day 2012 with hotdogs, drinks and chips (courtesy of Blackwell Grocery in Mansfield). a fun
Tree Climbing Activity for the kids (sponsored by Arbor Equity of Covington), free tree seedlings (thanks to the Town of Newborn and the Covington Service Guild) plus we had a very special guest:  Smokey the Bear!

Big progress already!  You may have noticed around town that so far 8 donated trees have been moved from DNR Charlie Elliott WMA to Newborn using the Georgia Forestry Commission Tree spade, 14 trees from Moon's Tree Farm have been planted and 34 more trees from Jack's Creek Tree Farm will be installed in January. The purchased trees were paid for with the GUFC Grant (see below). Citizens have agreed that after the initial planting they will keep the trees healthy by mulching and watering in the critical first few years.

Want to get involved? Join the Newborn Tree Board, which meets sporadically as needed but primarily volunteers to help our town's trees stay healthy.  Call Town Hall at 770-787-1660 or email for more information.
