NOTIFICATION OF DROUGHT RESPONSE LEVEL 1
The Town of Newborn is under the state-wide Drought Response Level 1 issued by the Georgia EPD, due to severe drought conditions throughout the state.
• Regularly check for, and repair, leaks inside and outside your home.
• Don’t leave the tap running. When shaving, brushing your teeth, washing your face, or food, turn off the tap.
• Only water your landscape when necessary and adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk or street.
As a reminder, under a Drought Response Level 1, general landscape watering may be done between 4pm and 10 am each day, and the following activities may be done at any time of day:
• Irrigation of personal food gardens may be done at any time of day;
• Irrigation of new and replanted plant, seed, or turf may be done at any time of day for 30 days after installation;
• Drip irrigation or irrigation using soaker hoses may be done at any time of day; and
• Hand watering with a hose with automatic cutoff or handheld container may be done at any time of day.

Georgia ReLeaf Trees planted in Newborn
The Town of Newborn completed planting Georgia ReLeaf Grant trees in Newborn last month. A total of 12 trees were planted in select locations along several street right of ways. The trees were provided by a Georgia ReLeaf Grant, funded by the US Forest Service, and the grant came through the Georgia Tree Council and the Georgia Forestry Commission. The Town received $8,600 through the grant for the tree planting. Species planted included: Overcup Oak, Nuttall Oak, Bald Cypress, American Hornbeam, and Serviceberry.
Newborn Tree Board member Beryl Budd coordinated the project and selected the trees for planting from Jack’s Creek Farms and a contractor, Keel’s Farms, planted the trees. Newborn Public Works and Newborn Tree Board members will mulch and water the trees as the Towns matching hours towards the grant. The trees were planted along streets to increase canopy, shade, and provide the many other benefits trees provide.
Additionally, as part of the grant funding, 200 three-gallon container trees will be purchased to give away to residents at the Town’s annual Arbor Day event on February 7th at the Newborn Historic Schoolhouse from 11-1 pm. The Town has also purchased Northern Red Oak seedlings to also give away while supplies last. Mansfield Market Place is providing lunch and there will be live music, tree climbing, fire prevention, and other activities as part of the annual Arbor Day celebration of trees.
